To understand the Christian faith, we must understand who Jesus is and what he has done. Christianity centres on the person of Christ and the work of Christ. Stott’s book therefore starts by considering the reasons to believe that Jesus was who he claimed to be. Before considering the work of Christ, he explains our need for this saving work because of the problem of sin and its consequences. He then goes on to examine in detail the reason Jesus had to die on the cross for our salvation. Christians are not just people who believe this, however; they are those who have deliberately asked Jesus to come into their lives as their Saviour and Lord. They count the cost before doing so, as such a commitment leads to a total change affecting every area of their lives.
