First Steps is a growing collection of resources designed to help new Christians who are setting out on the journey of faith for the first time. These resources will be built up gradually over the years, with the aim of being clear, simple, and accessible to everyone—whatever your background. They assume no prior knowledge of Christianity, the Bible or spiritual matters.
The Christian life is often described as a journey or pilgrimage. One of the Bible’s most common images for the spiritual life is that of walking with God. Again and again, God calls us to walk in his way, to follow his path. A prayer from the Psalms captures this well:
Show me the right path, O Lord;
point out the road for me to follow.
Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.
(Psalm 25:4–5)
The First Steps resources are written to help you begin walking this path. They will introduce you to truths and practices you can put into action as you start following Jesus. You can use them on your own, or even better, with the help of someone who has already been walking this path a little longer.
If you are a new Christian, I recommend starting with this short video which will help you think about what it means to begin following Jesus. Then, come back to these First Steps as a guide, and as a signpost to other resources that will encourage you along the way.
If you are reading this as someone helping a new Christian grow in faith, these resources can help you to help them. They provide simple introductions to essential areas of the Christian life — such as prayer, using the Bible, or learning to trust God — and point to further resources for deeper exploration. They are part of the wider library of resources being developed on this Different Kingdom site.
As these resources grow, I warmly welcome feedback—both from those discipling new Christians and from new Christians themselves. My hope is that, together, we can shape First Steps into a guide that is continually refined and made as helpful as possible.
