This book was based on research carried out by the Barna group, a research and communications company in the US. The authors argue that, as Christians, we are no longer in a relatively ‘safe’ and predictable Christian culture. Instead, because of the internet, social media and the all-pervasive use of our ‘screens,’ we are exposed to a contemporary ‘digital Babylon’. We are no longer in Jerusalem; we are all exiles in Babylon now. Although they are writing primarily about the US context where society had been more recently ‘Christianised’ than has been the experience of those of us living in Europe, their observations are still relevant and helpful. The fact is that we all live in a ‘post-Christian’ culture which is often indifferent to, and sometimes hostile to, the Christian faith. The focus of their research was on young adults and on identifying the qualities of what they call ‘resilient disciples’ – those young adults who sustained and grew their faith while exiles in digital Babylon. They identify five key practices that characterised these resilient disciples.
