How do we live our best life? What does a truly good life look like? In an age that celebrates celebrities and not saints, a culture that is often filled with the trivial and the shallow, what might it mean to be truly human in a full and authentic sense? These are the kind of questions that Eugene Peterson raises at the beginning of this book, Run With the Horses. You may or may not know that this title is based on a quote from Jeremiah and it is to the character of Jeremiah that Peterson turns for an inspiring example of someone who engages in ‘the adventure of goodness’ and ‘the pursuit of righteousness’. Like all the Old Testament characters, he is not flawless or heroic. He experiences complex, mixed emotions in extremely challenging circumstances. Like all of us, he struggles in the mess and muddle of life. But his whole life is lived in relationship to God. He lives by faith. In a series of reflections on the biographical parts of the book of Jeremiah, Peterson uses this remarkable prophet to show us what the quest for life at its best looks like.
