This month’s Old Testament readings take us through the end of Joshua and into the dark and turbulent era of Judges. Here, we witness Israel’s cycles of sin and struggle, defeat and deliverance, their ruthless enemies, and their flawed yet anointed leaders. We encounter well-known figures like Deborah, Gideon, and Samson before arriving at the story of the great prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel. This book introduces us to Israel’s first kings—the tragic fall of Saul and the astonishing rise of David, the shepherd boy who became Israel’s greatest king and a forefather and foreshadowing of an even greater King to come.
In our New Testament readings, we continue journeying through the Gospel of Luke, encountering the stories of Jesus—the stories we love to hear, as the old song reminds us. These stories include the feeding of the 5,000, the raising of Jairus’s daughter, the calming of the storm, the transfiguration, the conversion of Zacchaeus, and more. Jesus continues to astonish people with his teachings, his bold claims, and his call to costly discipleship. He also continues to clash with the religious leaders, challenging their assumptions by welcoming sinners and telling parables that overturn their expectations. Among these are the three powerful stories of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son—the last of which not only confronts the religious but also beautifully encapsulates the heart of the gospel.
I pray that as you read, you become more and more captivated by Jesus. Keep going. Start here.
