A Christian magazine that is thoughtful, honest and relevant.
I first encountered Premier Christianity in one of its earlier forms — Buzz magazine — back in the 1980s, just as I was beginning my faith journey (you can read something of the history of the magazine here). It was in Buzz that I first saw advertised the Anglican college where I ended up studying for my degree and where I met my wife. So I’m grateful to it for that! But in those early days, the magazine helped me find my feet, connecting my fledgling Christian belief with a wider world of faith and culture. But in time, I drifted away from reading it. The tone seemed to shift, I found it too light, too superficial, not offering the depth I was looking for.
That’s why it’s been such a pleasure to rediscover Premier Christianity over the past decade or so. In the last 10 to 15 years, the magazine has found a much more thoughtful and balanced voice. Today, it offers intelligent and accessible reflection on the pressing issues of our time, both in the church and in wider society. Whether it’s cultural hot topics, ethical debates, or theological controversies, the magazine engages them with grace, clarity, and honesty, offering a refreshing alternative to the more combative or simplistic approaches that we find on social media.
One of its great strengths is its commitment to being both evangelical and open-minded, rooted in gospel truth, yet unafraid to ask hard questions or explore different perspectives. Its interviews are always a highlight, from well-known Christian leaders and theologians like Tom Wright to artists, thinkers, and cultural commentators, like Graham Tomlin. The conversations are rich and thought-provoking. The magazine doesn’t shy away from the tensions and paradoxes that Christians face today, but nor does it lose sight of hope or the bigger picture of God’s kingdom at work.
Premier Christianity is also highly practical. Regular columns and features cover everything from church leadership and discipleship to mental health, social justice, and mission. The reviews and resource suggestions are consistently helpful, and the reader is always left with something to reflect on, and often something to act on, too.
If you’ve not picked up a copy in a while, it’s well worth another look. Premier Christianity has matured into a magazine that nourishes the mind and heart, offering a generous, thoughtful, and faithful witness to what it means to follow Jesus in today’s complex world.
