Welcome to August’s readings! And well done — you’ve now passed the halfway mark and are making excellent progress through the Bible in a year!

Over the past months, in the Old Testament you’ve travelled from Genesis, through the entire sweep of Israel’s history, and completed the major wisdom book of Job. Now, throughout August, you’ll journey further through the Psalms – a rich collection of prayer, praise, and poetry that gives voice to the human heart in every condition: from lament to thanksgiving, from cries for justice to songs of trust. Whether rejoicing in God’s goodness or wrestling with suffering and silence, the psalms remind us that God welcomes honesty and draws near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

In the New Testament over the last month, you’ve followed the birth and expansion of the early Church through the book of Acts. This month you’ll finish that powerful story. From there, you’ll dive into profound and inspiring letters of the apostle Paul, beginning with Romans. This is a towering letter that unfolds the depths of the gospel, the gift of grace, and God’s plan to save both Jews and Gentiles through faith in Christ. By the end of the month, you’ll be halfway through 1 Corinthians, where Paul speaks into the mess and beauty of a growing church, calling believers to unity, holiness, and love. These letters are full of challenge and encouragement for believers learning to live out their faith in a complex world.

You’ve already come so far! Be encouraged to keep going! Let each day’s reading draw you deeper into the story of God’s faithfulness and into a closer walk with Jesus.

The next five weeks of readings cover the period from 29th July to 2nd September.

As you read this month, may the Psalms teach you to pray, and may the letters of Paul strengthen your grasp of the gospel and what it means to live as the people of God in a broken world. You’re doing wonderfully well — keep going!
